"Some people have begun to claim that the usefulness of public libraries is long past. This is not true. A free community public library is one of the key components of the democracy in which we live. Democracies assume that everyone has equal access to information and ideas, allowing them to make wise decisions about how they are governed and how they vote. Libraries allow anyone to learn about the world, and the issues and ideas that shape it, regardless of income. While the manner in which information is dispensed constantly changes-from books to videos to the Internet and databases-libraries are the one place that everyone is guaranteed access to learning and ideas."
