Library District NewsLIBRARY DISTRICT TO RESTORE POSITIONS, ADD KEY EMPLOYEESThe new Fort Collins Regional Library District is working to restore positions that had been lost due to city budget constraints, as well as to redefine key positions that will meet the needs of a larger, independent district. Since its formation in January, the district has restored library hours, services and programs to levels that existed prior to city budget cuts. Now the library director and the district’s seven-member board of trustees are building a library staff that will serve the larger, growing community. The District Board of Trustees approved funding to restore or upgrade a total of 17 positions, most of which had been eliminated or left unfilled due to city budget constraints. Among these 17 positions are 13 jobs to be filled by new employees. These include teen librarian, business librarian, adult services programming librarian, children’s programming librarian, financial officer and communications officer. These positions are in various stages of the posting, search, and hiring process, and library officials hope to have all new employees in place by October. The remaining four positions are occupied by existing library employees, but have been reclassified to meet the evolving needs of the new district. "These employees will have a profound positive effect on the customer service and resources we are able to provide our patrons," said Library Director Brenda Carns. "We're excited about having the staff to serve the growing community. We'll be especially pleased to include employees devoted to serving the burgeoning teen population and our local business community." The district’s two branches have 2,700 daily visitors, 132,000 active cardholders and more than 2 million items checked out annually. Circulation per capita for the Fort Collins Public Library is among the highest for all libraries in the state. However, the library’s current staff to circulation ratio is among the lowest for all libraries in the state. The added positions will improve this ratio and enable the library to better serve patrons. In addition, the jobs represent a boost to the local economy and to community development. "These jobs will contribute significantly to economic growth through payroll, but there are other quality of life benefits and economic ripple effects that are just as important," said Carns. "A fully staffed library system will increase the quality of life for many in the community; it will give businesses more tools for success; it will offer additional educational resources; and it will bring more cultural opportunities to our citizens." The new employees will join a team of seasoned library professionals who served the library through a series of extensive budget cuts. In accordance with an interim intergovernmental agreement with the City of Fort Collins, the library district is working with the city to facilitate the hiring process.
