Library District NewsPLANS, CONSTRUCTION ADVANCE ON NEW SOUTHEAST LIBRARY BRANCHPlans for a new public library branch in southeast Fort Collins are taking shape as construction advances on Front Range Village, the shopping center where the library will be located. The 17,000-square-foot Southeast Library Branch, slated to open in late 2008, is a collaborative project involving the City of Fort Collins, the Fort Collins Regional Library District, and Bayer Properties, the developer of the Front Range Village site at the northwest corner of Ziegler and Harmony Roads. The southeast facility will provide citizens in the most rapidly growing area of the library district convenient daily access to popular, high-interest materials and services. The new library represents the culmination of many years of city planning as well as the fulfillment of a commitment made to voters when they supported the creation of a new Fort Collins Regional Library District in fall 2006. The City of Fort Collins will use library impact fees collected over the last decade to fund project design and construction, as well as the library’s opening collection of materials. The new library district will pay for the operation, maintenance, and staffing of the new branch, using funds from the mill levy which established the district. The library will occupy the second floor of a highly visible, easily accessible building off Harmony Road. The facility will offer bestselling and high-demand books, music, and movies for all ages; a ready reference collection; year-round children’s programs (including Summer Reading Program, storytimes and special/seasonal programs); popular programs for teens and adults; convenient book return; state-of-the art computers; a teen area; wireless Internet access; study rooms; meeting space for community members; and a nearby green space for outdoor programs. While the shell of the library is constructed, the district, the city, the developer and project architects are working together to complete interior plans. The facility is being designed to provide users with an attractive, stimulating library featuring comfortable, inviting spaces; an open floor plan; browser-friendly shelving; high interest collections; and convenient self-service options. The Southeast Library Branch also will draw on the strength and size of district’s two existing libraries. Main and Harmony Libraries will support the smaller southeast library by providing easy access to larger collections and referrals to more in-depth reference services and research assistance. Fort Collins City Council has allocated $6.6 million for design, construction and furnishing costs; and for purchasing the library’s collection. As the funding agent, the city is responsible for contractual and project management. Bayer Properties, an Alabama-based development company, began construction on Front Range Village in March. The company is making a substantial contribution to the library project by providing the second floor space to construct the library and use of adjacent parking for the library building, and by paying for associated infrastructure costs such as bringing in necessary utilities and streets. In addition to the new library, the 900,000-square-foot shopping center will include restaurants, office space, and specialty and service shops anchored by Lowe’s Home Improvement and Super Target. The library’s proximity to a large, diverse retail center will allow patrons to combine shopping and library visits. The center also will feature built-in green spaces; bicycle and pedestrian access; and storefront parking. The center is scheduled to open in late summer 2008.
