Requirements for Connecting to Library Services (from Home or Work): Java, JavaScript, and cookies are the default settings in your browser. If you have disabled them, you must change your configuration before attempting to connect to a database or My Library Account.

The catalog is located at http://fcgov.com/owl. Recommended screen resolution is 1024 x 768.

Recommended Browsers for OWL

The library recommends using a modern browser capable of supporting current Web standards. For example: While you can use some older browsers, use of a modern browser will help you take advantage of all the capabilities for sophisticated presentation and functionality found in powerful Web-based applications such as OWL.

Specifically, we recommend that you use a browser that supports HTML and XHTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), ECMAScript (the standard behind scripting languages such as JavaScript), and the W3C Document Object Model (DOM). Any of the modern browsers listed above provide at least base level support for these standards and will improve your browsing experience in the OWL and beyond.

Why Can't AOL, CompuServe, and MSN Users Connect to the Library Catalog?

AOL, CompuServe and MSN Explorer users may not be able to access library services such as My Library Account and Databases using their Internet Service Provider's integrated Web browser.

In order to connect to the library's services, you will need to download a copy of Netscape Communicator/Navigator, or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Once you have installed one of these browsers on your computer:
  1. Open up your AOL/CompuServe/MSN connection as usual.
  2. Log on to AOL/CompuServe/MSN.
  3. Minimize AOL/CompuServe/MSN, and then start Netscape or Internet Explorer on your computer.
  4. Use Netscape or Internet Explorer to navigate to the Library's Catalog.
  5. Select the library service you are interested in.

How to Disable Content Advisor in Internet Explorer

If you cannot login to My Library Account (you click on a link and get kicked back to the login screen) often the problem is that the Content Advisor in Internet Explorer is Enabled. The following steps will allow you to disable the Internet Explorer Content Advisor.
  1. Open your Internet Explorer (IE) browser.
  2. From the gray menu bar click Tools.
  3. Choose Internet Options...
  4. Click on the gray Content tab.
  5. Under the section "Content Advisor" click on the "Disable" button .
  6. If you are prompted for a password, you will need to type the password. When you have successfully disabled the Content Advisor, you will see an "Enable" button in the Content Advisor section of the screen.
  7. Click OK to close the Internet Options window.
  8. Close your browser and reopen it.
Try logging in to My Library Account again. You should be able to access your list of checked out items, holds, etc.

Why Can't I Connect to My Library Account?
  • A link to My Library Account is located at the top of any library catalog page.
  • If you entered your library card number incorrectly you will have a problem connecting to My Library Account. Make sure you are following the help instructions.

  • Content Advisor in Internet Explorer must be disabled.

  • From home or work you will need a valid library card to login to the library's licensed subscription Databases. Enter your Last Name and the barcode number from your library card just as if you were logging into My Library Account.
  • You must use the links on the database page to connect to the databases. You can bookmark the database page, but a bookmark to the database itself will not work.

  • If you haven't used your library card to check out materials recently, your card may have expired. To renew the card you will need present valid photo ID at the Circulation Desk of either the Main Library or the Harmony Library.
  • Not all resources are available to remote users. Those marked with a House button on the database page are available from computers outside the library; those marked with a Book button are available only on computers in the library.
