Library Wireless Policy

As a service to its users the Library provides free wireless Internet access. The Library does not provide technical support for wireless users.

Please be aware that the wireless network is not secure. Like many public wireless hot spots, information is not encrypted and is subject to electronic eavesdropping by others. Wireless users are responsible for providing for the security of their own equipment and electronic communications. Web links to wireless security information are provided on the library wireless welcome page users see when first accessing the network.

By using the wireless network you are agreeing to comply with this wireless use policy, as well as the Library's policies concerning use of the facility and standards of acceptable behavior. Policies are available for review at http://fcgov.com/library/policy.php.

The library exercises no control over and will not be held responsible for user-supplied equipment or Internet content that users choose to access or create using their own equipment.

While the library strives to provide a quality wireless system, it cannot guarantee the signal quality, bandwidth availability, or general Internet site availability at any time.

Safety Tips for Using Wireless in a Public Environment

The Library recommends these safety tips:

  1. Make sure you're connected to a legitimate wireless access point. The SSID for ours is "publiclibrary".
  2. Use current legitimate anti-virus and anti-malware (anti-spyware) software with updated definition files.
  3. Keep your operating system regularly updated with all available security patches.
  4. Enable (or install, if needed) legitimate personal firewall software for your computer.
  5. When using web services (including anything you would log into such as webmail, financial sites, and others), ensure that the site requires a secure login. Secure logins use the "https" protocol, and are generally indicated by a "lock" icon displayed in your web browser. Secure site logins help prevent electronic eavesdroppers from learning your username and password.
  6. Encrypt files before transferring or emailing them.
  7. Use a virtual private network (VPN) if possible.
  8. Be aware of people around you.
  9. Turn off file sharing.
  10. Password-protect your computer and important files.
